# ✚ Creating a metafield definition

To add a new custom field to your Shopify catalog from Peak PIM:

# Step-by-step

### 1. Open the Metafields settings

In Peak PIM, go to `Settings > Metafields`.

### 2. Click `Add metafield definition`

### 3. Choose what it applies to

A `product`, a `variant` or a `collection`.

### 4. Name it and pick a type

Give the definition a name and select the type of information it will hold (text, number, date, reference, etc.).

### 5. Pick which stores use it

Select which Shopify stores should have access to this metafield.

### 6. Save

# What happens next

Once created, the field becomes available on the matching items so you can fill in its value and publish it to Shopify.
